Tips to Encourage Summer Reading

Reading beneficial literature during the summer helps students retain what they gained over the school year and develops writing skills, knowledge, self-esteem, vocabulary, comprehension, focus, and memory. Best practices in promoting reading at home include:

  • Reading with your child(ren)

  • Bringing your child(ren) to the public library

  • Reading a paper form of reading material in front of their child(ren)

  • Showing and explaining what you are reading to your child(ren)

  • Using the electronic book program from a subscription or the library

  • Prioritizing reading and playing over any screen time
